Although bacteria grow abundantly in the warm, moist groin and arm pit areas, the odor of stinky feet has to be one of the worst to offend the human sense of smell. Perhaps, one of the smelliest objects are the legendary, malodorous sneakers. While it is true that some people perspire more than others, there are causal factors that promote the growth of bacteria in athletic shoes. The socks and inner lining of the shoe stay moist with sweat. Odor is more likely to grow when the shoes are made of man-made materials and the socks are nylon. Feet that are not washed frequently and well are prime targets for continued bacterial growth.
When plagued with stinky feet, one should make sure to thoroughly wash the feet daily with an anti-bacterial soap. Pairs of shoes should be alternated so they can dry out. Thick cotton socks will absorb sweat and are easily washed. Clean socks should be worn everyday. Leather and canvas shoes breathe much better than plastic and nylon. Washing the feet with benzoyl peroxide is also helpful in reducing bacteria. Using powder helps absorb moisture too. There are various shoe inserts containing charcoal that provide relief in some cases.
One herbal remedy for hyper-perspiration obtained from the Internet states that one and one-half tablespoons of boric acid should be put into cotton socks. They should be worn for three days. Afterward, the feet should be washed thoroughly. The sweating problem should be resolved for about six months. Some have reported that no further treatments were necessary. If the problem arises again repeat treatment and the problem should stay at bay for two years.
