Physical Education Is Essential

Having physical education classes is very important for a variety of reasons. Keeping our youngsters fit is a primary reason with the added benefit of building cardiovascular health. Playing games helps build team work. Kids are learning rules and the consequences of not following them. They learn the importance of good sportsmanship and develop a self-
confidence and better judgment when interacting with other peers.

Their growing bodies are becoming flexible as they develop gross motor skills. Some students need this motor input as their body parts learn to function with greater coordination and skill. Younger students are introduced to organized sports as a different mode of movement than free play in recess. Students learn that sometimes they can be the team leader and other times they are team supporters. Different positions on teams have quite different responsibilities. Baseball players each have a role but play together as a team. The same is true of volleyball and soccer. Some of these skills can be transferred into life in general.

Activity helps maintain a healthy weight and is useful in reducing stress. Children make new friends and build self-confidence. They learn that there is no "I" in team. Individuals learn to set goals for themselves. For example, they may run more more lap next week. Many students who have a difficult time in the classroom can shine in PE. Children who are exceptionally energized have the opportunity to run off some of that extra get up and go. Generally, PE curricula are set up so that activities are developmentally age appropriate for students. Outdoor activities might help students decide what kinds of activities they might enjoy out of school.
