Children come home from school with stories of all kinds. However, there are warning signs that you need to be aware of when it comes to your child's teacher. If your child consistently refuses via tears and tantrums to go to school, develops somatic complaints and says that the teacher is mean and calls them names, you need to do some checking. You can talk with your child's teacher to see what his/her teaching methods are, ask how they handle an incorrect answer by a child and, you can check with parents whose child has the same teacher. If you are not satisfied by the teacher's answers to your questions and the information you have obtained from your child and knowledgeable parents, it is time to talk to the principal.
Warning signs that your child might need to change teachers include ridicule and name calling. There is no reason to call a child lazy or stubborn or worse. A good teacher knows how to handle children with respect and sensivity when their work might not be correct. Teachers who rely solely on the rote method of learning and leave no room for creativity or thinking outside the box are stuck in their methodology. Those teachers who are sarcastic to students for whatever reason are not teaching children to be polite and tolerant. Stickers are great for young students but children should also be willing to participate in the learning process for the intrinsic reward of having learned something new. If your child's teacher is showing warning signs of the above characteristics, talk to them first. If they continue to denegrate your child or teaching methods remain the same, it's time to talk to the principal about a change of class.
