When Should Baby Be Given Solid Food?

Experts recommend the you take your cues from your baby before trying to feed them solid food. Baby's tongue thrusting behavior diminishes between four and six months. This is an innate behavior that prevents food from going down baby's throat and choking them while drinking from a bottle or breast. Babies are on individual time lines when it comes to being ready to eat solid food.

Some babies are ready between four and six months and others are not ready until seven months. Doctors recommend that babies be breast fed as long as possible as it gives baby's immune systems to develop. Formulas are fortified with vitamins and minerals. Some parents are anxious to get their babies to sleep through the night. This can be counterproductive as baby might react adversely. They may choke or vomit.Their immature digestive systems have not developed sufficiently to handle solid foods resulting in diarrhea. They are more apt to develop allergies to some foods. You can try thinned purees and if baby is ready you will know. Try every week until baby is receptive. Some doctors say that when baby can turn their head away from the bottle or breast to indicate they are full, you might try solid food.
