Campsite Meals Kids Will Love

Whether you are roughing it in a tent or eating around a table in your RV, you can cook meals for the entire day over an open fire. For breakfast, consider bacon and eggs cooked in a paper bag. Lay three thick slices of bacon in the bottom of a paper bag. Crack an egg over the bacon. Fold the top of the bag down firmly and poke a hole in the top. Hold over the coals until the egg is done. A half of an orange with the fruit removed also makes a nice bowl for cooking your egg as it can sit right on the coals. Bread can be held over the coals with a long fork or stick for toasting. For lunch, try burritos or pizza. Anything can be cooked in a cast iron frying pan or dutch oven.

For a main dish, a pouch mean is perfect. Your child can help in ways appropriate for their age. Place a piece of the meat of your choice on a piece of heavy duty aluminum foil. Add one sliced carrot, one sliced potato and one diced onion. Season with salt and pepper and thyme if your child likes it. Fold the foil securely but remember to leave room for expansion. Put the pouch on the coals for 20-30 minutes turning often. Kabobs made with your favorite meat and vegetables are quick and easy. The dutch oven is perfect for simmering a thick soup or stew.

Cornbread and biscuits can be baked in a greased cast iron frying pan. A baked apple, muffins or fresh fruit make a perfect dessert. An orange half with the fruit removed can be used to cook individual muffins when wrapped in foil and baked in the dutch oven for between five and ten minutes. Your kids will enjoy having been a part of cooking a meal over the fire.
