Your teenager might see some videos in health class in school about STDs. As a parent, it is our responsibility to find out what they know and, more importantly, make sure they are informed about causes, treatment and prevention. There are many questions your teen might be uncomfortable asking so you will have to have a heart to heart talk with them.
Teens need to know exactly how STDs are transmitted. They do not come from a toilet seat but can be picked up from body fluids on sheets, clothing or hands after touching an infected partner after intercourse. STDs are transmitted by direct physical contact with the genital and anal areas as well as by mouth. Bacterial STDs such as gonorrhea, syphilis and Chlamydia can be treated successfully with antibiotics. Viral STDs like HIV, HPV, and genital herpes can be treated but are not curable.
While condoms can help prevent the spread of STDs, there is still skin contact so transmission is still possible. However, condom use does significantly reduce the chances of catching an STD. There are not always visible symptoms of an STD so you are dependent on the honesty of your partner. Even they might not know because they are not showing any symptoms. Your teen should know that intercourse once with an infected person is enough to become infected. They should know that 66% of all reported cases are in persons under the age of 25 years. There are also about 25 diseases that are transmitted during intercourse. Hepatitis A and B can be prevented by vaccination. Hepatitis C is treatable but not curable. Untreated STDs can render a person incapable of having children. Worse of all, a few moments of pleasure could cost your teen a normal life span. If they do not feel comfortable talking to you, find someone they trust who will talk with them.
