Color Can Help Your Child's Memory

Research has shown that printed material in black on a yellow background is remembered better than black print on a white background. It turns out that the brain loves color! Color attracts attention and enhances memory. This is especially true of young children working with theirfavorite colors on flashcards or personal chart stories. Color can be used to emphasize
the most important information in text. Think of the hundreds of thousands of miles of neon highlighters that are dragged across lines of print in textbooks everyday. Used properly, they can be very useful in drawing a studying student's attention to pertinent points.

On the other hand, color can be distracting. The message can get lost if the bulletin board is all in reds, oranges and yellows. If orange letters are used on a red background of a Power Point slide, saturation takes place and the print is nearly unreadable. Many people don't pay attention to contrast. That's why you see yellow letters disappearing into the white on posters.

Think of the significance of the colors that you use with your child. Some colors are stimulating and others are calming. Used in the proper manner colors can distract your child or enhance their memory. Look at the products they can identify before they can read. There is a method to the way ads are created.
